Tekken 4 touch and go remix3/19/2024 This is genuinely one of my favourite moments in video game history. Ultimately, Twitch Plays Pokemon had to introduce a 'Democracy' mode, where viewers voted on button inputs to make progress. This is largely down to players walking into walls, choosing the wrong moves or jumping down ledges - decisions which could sometimes reverse hours of progress. The game lasted for more than 16 days of continuous gameplay, or 384 hours - 15x more than an average playthrough. Twitch plays Pokemon descended into anarchy. But how do you get more than 100k simultaneous players to agree on action without anyone trolling? Ultimately, solid progress through the game required the cooperation of everyone involved. The anonymous programmer responsible for the project used a bot to capture prompt messages from the viewers (up, down, left, right, start, a, b, etc.) which would translate to actions on-screen. More than one million viewers became players as they were responsible for what was happening in front of them. The experiment, if you're not familiar with it, is essentially an interactive version of Pokemon Red on Twitch. I'm talking about Twitch Plays Pokemon, which celebrated its 10th anniversary yesterday. It's one of the most hilarious and impressive use cases of video game fandom in action. Ten years ago, an anonymous Australian game programmer launched a social experiment involving one million people, Twitch and Pokemon Red. Riot Games pioneered the idea of gaming anthems IMO but more studios are now doing music releases as a key marketing beat for new titles. □ Respects the growing trend of game studios recognizing music collabs as a vital marketing asset by releasing an 'anthem' - essentially a key music asset celebrating the game. One of the earliest Tekken remix albums (Windermere: The Jungle Remixes) features remixes of Tekken music by UK artists and producers such as Lemon D and Dubtronix. □ Taps into the deep roots and links between fighting games and grime/ UK music. □ Lyrics reference Tekken lore and fighting games, adding to that authenticity □ D Double E is a massive fan of fighting games and Tekken, so this is an authentic partnership rather than getting in a big name for the sake of it. This is one of my favourite music and gaming collabs I've seen in a long time, and a masterclass in how to pull of an authentic partnership. Bandai Namco collaborates with grime legend D Double E and producer Fumez the Engineer on a new 'anthem' for Tekken 8.
